Highlander History

July 31, 1959 Raid on the Highlander Folk School

The Highlander Folk School was raided at 9:00pm on July 31, 1959. Headed by District Attorney Albert F. Sloan, the raid on the Highlander was aimed at finding evidence that would support the school's closing. Claiming to have a warrant to search for alcohol on the premises, Sloan called for and eventually arrested Septima Clark for "possessing whiskey." Perry MacKay Sturges and Guy Carawan followed Clark and the officers aksing if she could call an attorney. As a result, Carawan and MacKay were arrested for public drunkenness, interfering with officers, and resisting arrest.
